Rules of the game
So, as most of you know, I have been working on a board game for quite some time. Not as long as Art has been, but, yes. Well, I have play tested it a couple of times, once with my brother in law Aaron, and several times with myself. This is not as bad as you would think, but at the same time, i find I am constantly able to change the rules. This is a problem, because I would like to play with other people, and if I cant even get the rules in a solid state, how can I expect them to keep up with it. So I have finally written out a rough draft version of the rules of the game. I want to go ahead and let a few of you read the rules and see what you think.

ReplyDeletethey are quite voluminous. and since i never read rules, it's not likely that I will be reading nine pages worth of them any time soon. you should condense.
also, i usually learn the rules by having someone else explain the game to me, but more often, i learn how to play the game by actually playing the game, learn as you go

Doing so is helping me understand the game very well as well bringing up some questions! How exciting!
Here are my questions so far:
Can a Fighter defend against another Fighter's Long Range attack? (My opinion is no, unless he's a ninja.)
Does each player have a maximum of 2 monster/princess actions per turn, or does each of that player's monsters/princesses have a maximum of 2 actions during that player's turn? (I'm thinking the second. Am I right?)
Why isn't the exchange of a Treasure considered a Hero Action? Wouldn't it be a little less confusing if it was considered such?
Are heroes the only pieces that can retrieve Treasures?

ReplyDeleteOh, also...the rules aren't actually too lengthy. Most games print their rules in super tiny font, and if you were to do that with these I think it'd be fairly average - especially considering you included explanations of the different pieces, tiles, and cards. That being said, it's still a good idea to whittle 'em down a bit...so I'll get back to it and I'll send you the file when I finish. :3

I assumed that was a typo and switched it back to treasure in the attached file, but I just wanna be sure.
I'm starting to agree that counting the exchange of treasures between heroes should not count as an action. That'd be lame. :3

Looks very much like Hero Quest, but I like how the players create the dungeon as they play. Should be interesting!

My answer is Yes. This is how I see it. Your pieces, when defending are attacking back at the same time as defending, and vice versa. For standard pieces, they are doing that with swords, hammers, wrenches, wands, staffs, or flailing their arms about dramatically, so your basic hand to hand combat. for Fighters how ever, they can attack long range. All fighters can, despite their race, so that means they have some sort of weapon that can fire projectiles right? Like a gun, or crossbow, or bow and arrow? Well, if someone were shooting at me, I would shoot back, while i was ducking around. Just think of any spy or cowboy movie you've seen, and you get the idea.

Yes, the second one is correct. Each monster/ princess gets two actions to be spent per turn.

At first, when I thought of the concept of hero's exchanging treasure, it was an action, but so were a few other things. Stepping on a Trap tile, Challenge tile, or even picking of a treasure were all actions as well. This really slowed down the game. Each player had only eight actions normally per tern, and if half of them are just standing there swaping treasures, or doing challanges, it would make the game last for ever. So to speed it up, i made them take no action so the game could go faster.

Could you imagine if monsters and princesses could pick up and carry treasure? It would provide and unfair advantage i think.

Originally it was to double gold, but then I thought about it while I was writing the rules. The first game I ever play tested was with my brother in law Aaron. He played for gold, and I played for kills. He kept getting treasure cards, and completing challenges, thus racking up gold, and I kept killing him over and over again. in the end we were tied. This made me very happy because it meant the game was balanced, and not just one stratagem would always win over the other... unless he had been able to get the princess. (since there were two of us, their were only two treasures to be obtained.) If he had gotten the princess, he would have, and any one would, dominate the game. It would make all the killing, and traps pointless. So I thought, to balance it out again, give the princess double points for treasures retrieved.
What do you guys think?
